What is Pole Barn Construction?
Pole barn construction, or post-frame construction, if you prefer, is so named due to the large poles or columns that comprise the basis of the structural design.
Large poles or columns, in a diameter ranging from 4” to 12” or more depending on building size, are buried within the ground itself or attached to a more traditional foundation, providing the vertical support for the building. As a “traditional” foundation is not necessary, construction costs and associated pour and cure time are eliminated.
Girts, or sheeting rail, provide the horizontal support to the building and are integral in reducing wind load on the sides of the building.
Large trusses form the framework for the roofing structure and provide the support necessary to manage snow load and distribute weight evenly throughout the building structure.
This construction style allows for open areas much larger than those supported by more traditional structural systems. In fact, open areas in excess of 100’ are easily designed and supported.
